KOMET acquires JEL

An excellent strategic and technological complement to KOMET's core business of drilling

At the start of the year KOMET Präzisionswerkzeuge Robert Breuning GmbH (Besigheim, Germany), a leading manufacturer of precision tools for the metal machining industry, acquired Joh. und Ernst Link GmbH & Co. KG of Stuttgart, known for their JEL brand.

KOMET specialises in technically sophisticated drilling tools and has a reputation for being an innovative company that develops leading-edge products. A current example of this is the company's pioneering role in the field of what are termed intelligent tools.

With the acquisition of JEL, KOMET has managed an excellent strategic and technological fit. JEL's tools for thread cutting and their solid carbide drilling tools offer the most advanced technology for machining metal. Thread milling and tapping are of particular significance here.

In addition, JEL has established itself as a leading project management company in the field of tooling, while KOMET also operates successfully in this sector.

JEL's range also excellently complements the reaming tools manufactured by Dihart, a Swiss specialist acquired by KOMET in mid 1996, with particular reference to tools with soldered diamond cutters. Last year Dihart increased its sales by over 30%.

In future KOMET, Dihart and JEL will therefore operate as technical partners and offer their customers a comprehensive service.

Apart from the main factory in Besigheim, which is responsible for two additional production facilities, the KOMET Group also has a manufacturing base at Dihart AG in Dulliken, Switzerland, with a branch manufacturing operation in Rheinfelden. In North America, KOMET of America Inc. operates very modern production plants near Chicago with satellite operations in Detroit and Charlotte, North Carolina. The company has sales and service operations in England, France, Italy and Austria.

Apart from the companies controlled by the group, the KOMET/Dihart range is sold through over fifty agencies abroad.

KOMET is pursued its globalisation strategy with the establishment of a company in Mexico and a liaison office in India in 1998, and this year a sales and service subsidiary will open in Brazil.

In the 1998 financial year KOMET's 1370 employees boosted sales by 12% to over DM 250 million and over the same time profit margins were found to be higher than average. This positive development in the business resulted in the creation of over 90 new jobs at the Besigheim headquarters alone over the last year. Over DM 20 million was invested in the Group. Here the company focused on expanding its business in tools with extremely hard cutting materials.

JEL, which has just been acquired, employs approximately 70 people and in 1998 achieved sales of over DM 22 million. The company will continue to be managed by its existing principal shareholder, Hans-Jörg Link. Dietmar Bolkart and Peter Höger, KOMET's managing directors, are of the opinion that this will ensure that JEL will retain its own identity yet, at the same time, integrate smoothly into the Group and continue to develop, as was similarly achieved with the successful acquisition of Dihart.

In view of the uncertain economic climate, KOMET's management is expecting comparatively slow growth in 1999, however, it is still anticipated that the Group will achieve better results than average for the sector.

Measured force and dynamism / P 70
the new feed unit with a high-power drive

The P 70 feed unit is the latest electronic tool launched by KOMET. It features a high-power drive with a resolver, as well as a powerful microcomputer and non-contact transmission of power and data. This tool with a modular design consists of a "changeable pull rod" for the 160 mm dia. system size which can be combined with a machine interface such as ISO/SK 50 or HSK 100. Apart from a single facing slide with 8 mm lift, a host of customer-specific versions can be produced, including a valve seat tool with a retractable reamer.

Thanks to the compact structure and the use of high-performance components, the unit can be adjusted to micrometer accuracy.

The control is activated via PLC signals, e.g. free M commands. Many controls already support this or this can easily be retrofitted by the machine manufacturer. Typical applications are louvres, undercuts, chamfering and facing. Without this unit, these operations can only be performed with great difficulty by milling, with the resultant loss of accuracy.

With the P 70, KOMET has been successful in producing a user-friendly solution which combines a good performance with innovation

M042 / Precision machining with a direct measuring system
The M042 does not reveal the secret of its precision at first glance. Concealed inside the unit are highly developed electronics which provide the perfect complement to the tried and tested mechanical components.

Power and precision, to match the requirements of current and future machining tasks - these are the demands which the M042 was designed to meet. The M042 precision adjustable head is equipped with a direct measuring system on the adjustment slide, a servo motor and an infrared electronic transmit and receive system. The external power supply is provided without contact.

To date, in order to obtain tolerances in the micrometer range, it has been necessary to intervene manually and take measurements and implement corrections during the final machining of the bores. However, ideally tolerances should be measured and corrected automatically during the manufacturing process. The M042 provides a closed control loop for increments of a thousandth of a millimetre. Various measuring instruments (feeler, measuring sensor, in-process and post-process) can be incorporated in the system. The measuring equipment can ascertain when the set tolerance limit has been reached and a correcting cycle for the M042 precision adjustable head is initiated.

The M042 can be used individually for various machining centres, special machines and transfer lines and thus provides the optimum solution to meet specific customer requirements.

Easy Special
Simple special tools
easy_sp.jpg (25152 Byte)
As a leading manufacturer of special tools, KOMET can now supply high-tech tools from the planning stage to customer production, in less than three weeks. The time factor aside, price will obviously play an important role here:
The special tools can be purchased at a fixed price, in line with the standard tool price range.

The sharp reduction in delivery times for special tools has been achieved with a well-thought-out 3D EAD/EAM strategy. The key to this lies in the parameterisation of different tool models; according to the machining task, these are modelled and programmed variably, within fixed terms of reference. The customer refers to a table of possible design dimensions. He or she enters the required dimensions on a form and faxes this directly to KOMET's pricing department. Here the tooling data specific to the customer is recorded, with work schedules and the necessary NE programs being generated automatically.

By integrating this EAD/EAM strategy into the manufacturing process, it is possible to implement efficient manufacturing procedures from the initial quotation, through the work on the production equipment, up to the moment of despatch. This cuts down the throughput time considerably. The consequent reduction in time also means lower costs.

Better value, tailored to requirements, faster - ideal for satisfied customers.

HSC
The high-speed programme
hsc.jpg (29712 Byte)
New cutting technologies such as dry and hard machining and, in particular, high-speed cutting (HSC) are now important factors. Current thinking tells us to move away from inflexible manufacturing equipment and instead implement flexible manufacturing concepts based on machining centres. Here it is important that the entire chain of processes - machine tools, tool holders/adapters (interface), tools and cutting materials - be matched to the relevant machining task in the most efficient way.

Although HSC turning does not place increased demands on the tool when static, the highest demands are made on rotating HSC tools, owing to centrifugal force and the high rotational speed.

HSC monobloc tools are extremely suitable for both drilling and reaming and for circular milling.

In respect of reversible cutting insert tools, KOMET has an excellent range of HSC cutters. Examples of this are KOMET's face milling cutters which are capable of cutting speeds of up to 8,800 m/min, thanks to the inserts embedded around the circumference (e.g. 100 mm dia.) and limit speeds of up to 27,000 rpm.

Spindle speeds of up to 10,000 rpm can be achieved with the development of HSC facing heads. For this, the facing head is finely balanced over the entire adjustable range (9 mm lift).

The new HSC high-speed programme thus satisfies all the demands of today's HSC technology.

The new M040 precision adjustable head
Robust, precise and simple
m040.jpg (20510 Byte)
With the M040 precision adjustable head, which has been redesigned and perfected technically, KOMET presents a top-class precision tool.

The new M040 is even more robust, thanks to the application of new technologies. It is dustproof and waterproof (IP67) and is therefore not affected by swarf and coolants.

A further advantage is its accurate measurement. In contrast to other precision adjustable heads, the M040 takes direct measurements. The slide adjustment is recorded directly by an electronic displacement measuring system. The measured value is analysed by a microprocessor and displayed on an LCD with a resolution of 1 micrometer. This prevents calibration and reading errors.

It is also considerably more simple to operate. Only two keys are needed to switch between absolute and differential weights, and to set the differential weight to zero. It is easy for the concentric position or the balance position to be found again in absolute mode without a pre-setting unit. The adjustment value has also been increased to 5 mm in diameter.

The additional energy saving function switches off the M040 automatically after 30 seconds.

With the M040, KOMET has created a precision tool which adapts easily to the high demands of the latest machine technology and delivers excellent results.

M03Speed precision adjustable head
Fast - dynamic - accurate
m_0145.jpg (18265 Byte)
The problem is well-known: flexible cutting tools, where the positions of weights shift as a result of changes in the cutting positions, lead to an imbalance; this must be compensated, particularly at higher rotational speeds.

With KOMET's new M03Speed precision adjustable head this compensation is carried out automatically by means of balancing weights which can be moved diametrically.

The special advantage of the compensation method used by the M03Speed is that the imbalance is corrected within a plane and thus static as well as dynamic balance compensation is achieved.

The M03Speed is also capable of performing the smallest infeed steps in the micrometer range within the precision adjusting range of 0.25 - 0.6 mm at the diameter.

The variable tool machining diameter with radial positioning travel of 4.5 - 12.0 mm permits the tool size to be matched as accurately as possible.

As the geometry of the M03Speed is identical to that of the conventional M03, there is no problem with compatibility.

With the new M03Speed, KOMET has developed a rotational precision tool which satisfies the highest demands in respect of balance, and also manages to achieve even shorter machining times and higher cutting speeds.

V464 drill head with an ABS connection
Versatile and efficient
v_464.jpg (19140 Byte)
KOMET's latest generation of drilling heads, the V646, is now also equipped with the tried-and-tested KOMET ABS® connection, thus providing maximum versatility and efficiency.

Owing to their compact design, they can be used with standard KOMET ABS® components, which achieve the best machining quality when used vertically for drilling depths to 4 x D and horizontally for drilling depths to 6 x D.

The drilling head adapter can be fitted directly into the basic holder, thus allowing very short tool lengths to be used for small drilling depths.

The resulting short and compact design of the tool clearly improves stability and process reliability. In conjunction with the inserts, which give an adjusting range of 5 mm in the diameter, the tools are also much less susceptible to wear and are easier to repair.

The drilling heads are fitted with four or six inserts within the ranges 80 - 155 mm diameter. A large choice of different inserts guarantees optimum tool life and drilling results.

Vibration-optimised solid-carbide boring bars
bohrstan.jpg (15733 Byte)
KOMET's new vibration-optimised solid-carbide boring bars allied with the extremely soft-cutting inserts provide a high degree of flexibility and process reliability.

Vibration-optimised boring bars do not only have an effect on the service life of the inserts and the surface finish of the bore to be machined. The material of the tool holder also has a crucial influence on the geometry of the drilled hole produced and the deflection properties of the boring bar.

For special applications, this tool concept can be used successfully for premachining and finishing deep bores and for bridging interference contours on workpieces or fixtures up to projection lengths of 9 x D.

The modular design of this new tool system means that it is easy to combine with other KOMET components, e.g. with the M03 precision adjustable head. Thus the new vibration-optimised solid-carbide boring bars can be integrated seamlessly into the overall KOMET system for machining bores.
