KOMET GROUP opens IDEEN-FABRIK + | 19.09.2008Be creative with Rudolf Diesel, Leonardo da Vinci and Marie CurieInnovative tool concepts and holistic solutions for the bore machining industry distinguish the KOMET GROUP as a worldwide leader in technology, with its leading market position. The company, based in Besigheim in Germany, is celebrating its 90th anniversary with another milestone in the story of its continued success. The IDEEN-FABRIK + (pronounced “ee-DANE fa-BRICK PLUS”) revives, reinterprets and sets trends as it carries forward the company values of founder Robert Breuning. Taking just 13 months to construct – from the demolition of the old administrative building to the inauguration on 18-19 July – the new IDEEN-FABRIK + represents a substantial investment, seven million euro, in the future of the company and the Besigheim plant. Behind this is the knowledge that in Germany, a high-wage country, the future cannot be assured through investment in machines and buildings alone. Rather, being a high-performance and highly-qualified location is essential. The transformation of the company from tool manufacturer into a group of creative experts who provide solutions for boring, precision grinding and the production of threads, as well as with mechatronic tools is reflected architecturally in the newly opened IDEEN-FABRIK +: the KOMET GROUP stands for added value in terms of user support and services for its customers and partners. In Besigheim this integrated philosophy is known as “TOOLS PLUS IDEAS” and underlines with this unique selling proposition who we are and what we stand for. In order to offer their customers a measurable and lasting competitive advantage in their markets, the KOMET GROUP itself must produce first class performance in terms of technology, process capability, employee training and customer orientation. And this is precisely what is reflected in the concept and design of IDEEN-FABRIK +. Factory of ideas and IDEEN-FABRIK +A modern, multilevel factory environment was created, with an area totalling 2,500 m2. It was our express intention to build the IDEEN-FABRIK + not as a separate training building, but to integrate it directly above the production floor. So while metal cuttings fly about below, up above ideas are being born. This spatial proximity encourages mental activity and creativity that is not detached and aimless, but is particularly practical and realistic. Moreover, the boundaries between “manufacturing” and “creativity” even blend together visually, because a specially designed industrial ambience that exudes a unique sense of well-being was chosen for the interior furnishings of the IDEEN-FABRIK +. It goes without saying that all the latest communication media have been thought of, such as internet access and mobile phone chargers. At the front and back ends, diagonally opposite each other in the vast, L-shaped, 650 m2 foyer, there is a bar and a branded workbench – the latter for a realistic experience and further development of the whole KOMET GROUP concept – by employees and customers. From here a robot also holds out its arm for different tasks to the problem solvers working away. The L is designed to be multifunctional and flexible so that changing focuses and encounters become possible. For the inauguration, for instance, displays with themed areas such as history, precision, speed, flexibility and stability have been designed and created to be touched; because comprehension has to do with touching. Many parts of the first-class presentation system were manufactured in our own training workshop. Leonardo da Vinci as a stimulus
Much more importantly, however, is that the attributes of creativity, an exemplary nature, desirability, ambition and support which are found collectively find their creative, actual equivalent here: creativity on an international level in terms of processes and products, an exemplary nature through clear and efficient ideas as benchmarks for the future, desirability through modern drive and aesthetics, ambition in the search for the best solution for the team and support through added value which go far beyond the product benefit. Ultimately, ideas management at the KOMET GROUP should benefit from the creative environment: Two thousand ideas for continuous improvement of processes are expected in the first year alone – and to support these in practice, an implementation time of or just four weeks has been set, from submission to reality. These are absolute, measurable, crystal clear objectives, which enable process control and management even for these immaterial values. Training is adapting to a changing world Under its new management, the KOMET GROUP with IDEEN-FABRIK + has now breathed new life into what was first begun by Robert Breuning with innovative inventions and his recognition and laying down of the company values: to produce a basis for the man and employee success factor, which enables us look to the future with confidence. With its brands KOMET, KOMET DIHART and KOMET JEL, the KOMET GROUP is a leading global manufacturer of precision tools for bore machining, threading and reaming. The group has led the way in innovation in the sector for over 90 years - a tradition that began with the early insert drills and that continues today with their mechatronic tool systems. The company currently employs more than 1,600 staff in its 20 subsidiaries and is represented in around 50 countries.

KomTronic® U-axis systems in use at ROMAI® for high-end machining | 19.09.2008ROMAI® handles high precision internal machining, typical tasks performed by jig boring machines, using a KomTronic® U-axis system in the machining centre.
The ROMAI Robert Maier GmbH in Vaihingen/Enz-Horrheim is known right across the sector for its versatile articulated multispindle heads. ROMAI® develops, designs and manufactures a comprehensive range of products from powered tools to angular boring heads and high-speed-spindles to stationary and replaceable multispindle heads that simplify manufacturing processes and go beyond standard applications to provide the user with custom performance and streamlining. At the same time, the concentricity of the inside diameter, from the seat of the coolant cartridge to the bearing seat and beyond, is of vital importance to quality, as is the position of the bore holes to each other in particular with reference to multispindle solutions. In sophisticated products, it is usual today to have parts with precision requirements of around +/- 5 µm. A KomTronic® U-axis system enables complete machining which includes turning operations, on components that are often not rotationally symmetric, in one machining centre for high-end machining. Using the U-axis system from KOMET® complex contours can be freely programmed and produced in one contour operation. In comparison to conventional boring, this saves tools and tool replacement times and when you consider the complexity of most products that are manufactured as individual pieces or limited series, this represents an enormous improvement in terms of efficiency. Finally, this also reduces the processing times significantly which is just as pleasing to ROMAI® as the increased precision that comes when tools no longer need to be changed in this sector and the associated imprecision caused by changing tools. The U-axis system from KOMET® enables standard turning steels to be used as adaptor tools that are directly fitted with modular tool adaptors onto the teeth on the slide.Different adaptors from the KomTronic® modular system make it possible to use tools with different standard connections. In regard to achieving ever higher precision requirements, the U-axis system is an investment in the future for ROMAI® .
The replaceable NC-axis KomTronic® U-axis systems essentially consist of one compact facing head with single slide that is driven by a servo motor and threaded spindle. The power supplied to the electronics and the drive is transmitted contact-free and inductively to the U-axis system. Similarly, the data is exchanged inductively with the U-axis system. A so-called stator is mounted on the spindle side. It is segment-shaped, which permits the tools to be replaced automatically. The ring-shaped inductive transmission unit on the U-axis side ensures proper data and energy exchange in every angular position. Thanks to the freely programmable and cutting edge that is dynamically adjustable during machining, the mechatronical U-axis systems are automatically replaceable NC-axes. Programming is carried out in the usual NC programming language and is integrated in the machine control. You have all of the functionality of a normal ISO programme available to you.
